Helpful Information for Ophthalmologists and Referring Specialists

The Ocularists Association of Australia members work alongside other health specialists, ensuring both comfort and cosmesis.

Members are committed to:

  • Infection-control protocols appropriate for ocular prosthetic care
  • Use of high-quality, medical-grade materials
  • Clear communication with ophthalmologists and surgeons
  • Monitoring any changes in the eye socket and referring when necessary.

Why Referral Matters

Involvement of an Ocularist can:

  • Support healthy socket and facial development in children
  • Assist with eyelid function and tear flow/ comfort/ health of socket
  • Support long-term socket health
  • Polish and assessment of prosthesis

Information Helpful for Ocularists

The following information is helpful for the Ocularist when referring a patient:

  • Surgical history and socket details
  • Healing status and timelines
  • Any anatomical or medical considerations
  • Ongoing clinical concerns requiring monitoring
  • Any planned surgeries

Early Referral is Important

Early referral allows the Ocularist to see patients 6-8 weeks post eye removal surgery.

Members follow clinically appropriate timelines for prosthetic fitting based on tissue healing, socket condition, and the advice of the treating surgeon.

Long Term Socket Health

Care does not end once a prosthesis is fitted. Long-term socket health is supported through regular prosthesis reviews, ongoing monitoring of the eye socket tissues, and guidance on hygiene and day-to-day maintenance.

If any clinical concerns arise, members work in collaboration with ophthalmologists and other specialists to ensure patients receive timely and appropriate medical care.
